 Getting there on Visconde de Mauá

The main access to the region of Visconde de Maua is through Nova Dutra Highway (BR-116) at km 311 , between the towns of Itatiaia and Resende . Those cities are located at the south of Rio de Janeiro , ou north of São Paulo , Brazil.

The region of Visconde de Mauá is bordered by Itatiaia National Park, and it is in the circuit of Water of Serra da Mantiqueira , north of SP and south of MG and RJ. Visconde de Mauá is a region that is highlighted by the abundance of waters, well represented by numerous rivers, waterfalls and cascades of crystal clear waters.

 
From the city of Rio de Janeiro to Visconde de Mauá are 210 km and travel by car takes on average 3 hours . The access is always through the Nova Dutra Highway until you take the exit at km 311 .

Who comes from Sao Paulo is better to go for  Airton Sena Highway (pick at the end of the Marginal Tietê to north) and after keep moving to  Carvalho Pinto Highway(picture above)

 
In Rodovia Carvalho Pinto, follow to Taubaté , to get the exit for Highway Nova Dutra at km 129. Do not pass this exit, otherwise you go to Campos do Jordao.

Getting to New Dutra from São Paulo , follow to Rio de Janeiro , you will go through Taubaté, Aparecida do Norte, Queluz and finally Itatiaia, where there will be a exit to the region of Visconde de Maua at km 311. From Sao Paulo to  Visconde de Maua is 300 Km in total and it takes on average 4 hours of travel by car.

 
Both for those from the RJ, or SP, after leaving the New Dutra at km 311, between the towns of Itatiaia (RJ) and Resende (RJ), hold on the main road, which will ends up in thee Highway Rubens Tramujas Mader.

Right at the beginning of this Highway,  before go up to the mountains , there is a gas station and a cafeteria .

After 2 km from the gas station , there will be a rotation with exits to Visconde de Maua , just follow the signs .

Despite being of gravel , the road has good conditions to regular cars . Do not hurry and keep your eyes on the road, because there are some points of bottlenecks in the way. Some bouncing you will meet also  .

When going up to the mountains, you enter in Area of Environmental Protection . Beware of animals on the track, remember, the region of Visconde de Maua borders with the Itatiaia National Park .

After go up the road you will get to the region of Visconde de MauA . Three main villages make up the region of Visconde de Mauá : Maringa ,  Maromba and Visconde de Maua as such .

Among the 3 villages are the valleys: Valley of Santa Clara, Valley of Cruzes ,  the Valley of Alcantilado and the Valley of  Pavão. Due to the region has many rivers, you will go cross several bridges of wood.

The first village of Visconde de Maua (photo below) you will find restaurants, hostels, bars, shops, pharmacy, station and post health .

After passing the first village , you will get to the Village of Maringa , the main trade village of the region of Visconde de Maua .

Before arriving in the village of Maringa , you will pass through the unique gas station of the region  .

The village of Maringa is point to hang out in the night  due to the excellent restaurants and pubs that you will find over there .

The town of Maringa also has market, and local pharmacy to lease motorcycles and bicycles.

 

 
Also live there, the docile mule Rosinha , mascot of the region and who loves candy . Certainly she will appear near your table to get some .

Regular cars get to get to the main villages with no difficulty  and main waterfalls , except to some bouncing and a bit of mud , if it rains.

After passing the town of Maringa-RJ , just keep the main road for another 3 km, so you will arrive in last village of Visconde de Maua , which is the village of Maromba , photos above and below.

The village of Maromba (pictured above) is the simplest of the 3 , but reserve the main waterfalls and natural swimming pools in the region of Visconde de Maua , such as waterfalls Véu da Noiva , Poção , Macacos and Cachoeira do Escorrega , all of them are the postcard of the region of Visconde de Maua (photos below).

Close to the village of Maromba you will meet the valley of the Santa Clara , known as cradle of the waters because the abundance of springs and rivers of crystalline water.

Because of the geological characteristic , Visconde de Maua is one of the few places in Brazil , where you can still bathe in rivers with mineral waters .

The region is well signed for the main villages , inns and waterfalls.

In short , the village of Maromba and the Valley of Santa Clara are places to go outdoors with plenty of trails , waterfalls , natural pools and horseback riding . And the village of Maringa deserves a visit at the end of afternoon or evening for a dinner for two.

There is no direct bus from Sao Paulo to Visconde de Mauá , has to make the transfer in the city of Resende in a Grall gas post sation . From Rio de Janeiro there are buses departing direct , see the numbers below:
